Model UN

5 02 2008

For most of us, this weekend was spent in the aftermath of the Homecoming game –Go Spartans! For some of us, the weekend was spent in a United Nations conference.  This weekend the Mid-south Model United Nations conference was held at Rhodes College.  The conference lasted for five hours on Friday, fifteen hours on Saturday, and five hours on Sunday.  The other competitive schools included Houston High and Germantown High.

“This year we had the highest in participation in Model UN and most of the delegates were freshmen.” stated Mrs. Matson, the sponsor, earlier in the first meeting of the club.  Sources state that there were twenty-four freshmen participants, twice the number of delegates from some of the other schools.

In Model UN, students become mature delegates from distant countries to discuss problems that the real United Nations is going through.  The trick?  Students also have to solve the issues by writing however many resolutions it takes to make the majority agree to the plan.

Congratulations to freshman Stephanie K. for winning Best Delegation –France.  Next year, we’ll take all the prizes!

Swim Team

Congratulations to the White Station Swim Team! The Varsity went on to State Championships, and the Junior Varsity, mostly freshmen, won medals at City Championships. Coaches Moore and Sturgis are coaching the teams.  Though the season is long gone, members still remember the meets.  The swimmers were encouraged to practice three times a week at the University of Memphis or any other pool, and they did as many laps as possible.  As a result, many of the ten freshmen won gold, silver, or bronze medals.

“I absolutely recommend doing this again next year. All the freshmen should come join me!” says Bhavna K..

White Station is proud of its swimming team!
